Multi-media entertainment studio Moment Factory creates a multi-sensory experience within Montreal’s grandiose Notre-Dame Basilica using sound, light and video projection-mapping.
Designed by Irish-American architect James O’Donnell in 1824, the Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal is a picture of divinity. Now, as part of the city’s 375th anniversary celebrations, the iconic heritage landmark has been given a new, and luminous, lease of life. Montreal-based multimedia entertainment studio Moment Factory has created AURA, a transformative experience that propels visitors on a sacred journey using layers of augmented reality and spatial orchestral scoring within the walls of the Gothic Revival cathedral.

Since its opening in March 2017, AURA, which seats 600 people at a time, has been performed over 400 times. The 45-minute experience, presented in two acts, unfolds beneath the grandiose Basilica’s lofty rood screens. Before being seated, visitors are encouraged to discover and connect with sublime artworks highlighted by multimedia-enhanced installations on a self-led tour.

The second act, when the Basilica’s interior is bathed in a series of animated projections, is just as, if not more, breathtaking. Coupled with an orchestral composition interpreted by 30 musicians, 20 chorists and the Basilica’s resonant organ, the experience is soul-stirring.

Conceived in 2015 by the Moment Factory team and the cathedral’s managers, Fabrique de la Paroisse Notre-Dame, the project was produced by over 100 people. Bringing this vision to reality required an intensive year of musical composition and recording, four months of visual content production, 90 days of installation and a month of content integration and testing.

The technical rig of a total of 21 projectors — seven for the exploratory introduction and 14 for the second act — and 140 lights, four lasers and 20 mirrors is but one of the cogs in the machine.

To fully utilize the cathedral’s intricate architecture as a complex digital canvas, in a seamless manner, Moment Factory developed X-Agora, a specialized projection-mapping software that permits the creation of complex 3D maps of concave surfaces and ornate carvings. The video projections were also tuned to match the cathedral’s vibrant chromatic palette so as to enrich the existing details.

Welcome to Fall

Welcome to Fall

I have just spent a week in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The foliage was just starting to turn into a wonderful koliascope of colors. Unseasonably warm then while there, we are now getting back to the usual temperatures of October. The gardens are wilting down, the skins on the tomatoes are thicker, canning and freezing are in full operation. Corn stalks are turning brown in the fields, and as the leaves die back, acres of bright orange pumpkins are evident against the backdrop of browning leaves. Sumacs along the edge of the swamps are bright red and are probably the earliest of the changing season.
The tree leaves, although still changing color here, are starting to drop. They go in stages. Most noticeable are the maples as they seem to go overnight. The oaks, that are most abundant in this area, go more slowly. Many do not lose all of their leaves over the fall but wait for spring and new growth. All I really know is that by Thanksgiving I will be knee deep in leaves and thanking God for leaf blowers.

Right now the houses on the street are slowly starting to sport scarecrows, orange lights, pumpkins, and corn stalks. Soon the neighborhood children will be buying and making costumes for trick-or-treating. I’m stocking up on candy bars as there will be about one hundred little ones knocking at my door. Some not so little ones, too. I chuckle at the less than one-year-olds that come in their parents’ arms, knowing full well that these babe-in-arms will get none of the bounties.

It is a wonderful time of year. With a chill in the air, it is a great time for walking and hiking. Despite a year with a heavy infestation of gypsy moths, the oak trees have put out an abundance of acorns. That means that with this bounty the squirrels will have been just as busy reproducing large litters. That may mean a problem for next year. If the season does not provide for the newcomers, then the population of squirrels will dwindle again. They come and go from year to year.

It’s the time of year that I start looking towards my own Halloween decorating. I don’t do a lot, but do enjoy carving pumpkins. Choosing from a collection of patterns that were collected over the years, I pick them based on available time and the effort required to do the work. There is a ghost that hangs from a tree to welcome the kids with a cackle. Using white paper bags and black silhouettes, luminaria lines the walk up to the front door. The advent of flickering battery operated lights take away the danger of flames in the pumpkins and luminaria. Other smaller lights and decorations are brought out of storage. The costume for the dog involves a bandana and motorcycle hat. My own costume comes from a collection in that same storage area and varies from year to year. With a motorcycle dog, then a motorcycle Mama may end up being the choice.

Not a big fan of roasted pumpkin seeds, when the guts are pulled from the pumpkins, I put the collection in a large shallow roasting pan. This pan is placed on a storage box on the deck just outside of the living room window. From my recliner, I am privy to a private show of the squirrels coming up to feed on them. It keeps them out of the bird feeders. The biggest male always stakes his claim on the pan of seeds, chasing away all others. Somehow that just doesn’t seem fair.

Life on Galapagos: The Invertebrates

Life on Galapagos: The Invertebrates

The unique flora and fauna of the Galapagos Archipelago attract nature lovers from all over the world to explore the region. The best way to do it is on a Galapagos wildlife cruise, which affords participants the opportunity to experience the astounding diversity of the island’s habitats and encounter a wide range of animals.
The mammals, reptiles, birds and marine animals of the archipelago are fairly well known by visitors, and many of the high-profile species can be seen on a Galapagos wildlife cruise. Surprisingly, though, the largest group of organisms is often overlooked.

The Invertebrates

Invertebrates have no backbone and are officially classified as animals that “neither possess nor develop a vertebral column”. They include insects, spiders, snails, worms, centipedes and many others. Like all the wildlife, this group had to arrive at the islands either on the ocean currents, with birds, or attached to vegetation or driftwood washed up on the shoreline.

The terrestrial invertebrates exist in every habitat and account for around 51% of the archipelago’s total biodiversity. While they may be small in size, they are absolutely crucial to the delicate balance of the ecosystem. Not only do they act as pollinators, they contribute to the formation of soils by recycling organic matter, and they also feature as an important link in the food chain as part of the diet for birds and small mammals.

The marine invertebrates include the molluscs, sponges, annelids (segmented marine worms), cnidarians (including corals), echinoderms (sea cucumbers and urchins) and many others.

Unique and Imbalanced

While many are still identical to their ancestors on the South American mainland, due to the remoteness of the region and the diversity of habitat just as many have adapted in order to survive. It’s estimated that around 52% of them are endemic. This means that some groups are represented in greater proportion than others, so they are considered to be “imbalanced”.

It is not known exactly how many invertebrate species are found throughout the archipelago, although in 2001 the number was estimated to be well over 2,000 (just for terrestrial ones), with the insects the most diverse and numerous. Some of the insects that may be seen on a Galapagos wildlife cruise include butterflies, dragonflies, moths, wasps, grasshoppers, spiders and flies.

Giant Snails and Colourful Crabs

The giant land snails are a distinctive group comprising around 60 species. They are similar to Darwin’s Finches in that they appear to have made specific adaptations to survive in particular habitats.

While most invertebrates don’t enjoy the glamorous status of some of the mammals and reptiles seen on a Galapagos wildlife cruise, one certainly attracts attention. The delightfully skittish Sally Lightfoot Crab can be seen scurrying between rocks on the shoreline, and its vibrant red and blue shell makes it a favourite with nature lovers.

While at first glance this group may not be as impressive as the Giant Tortoise or have the character of the quirky Blue-footed Booby, they are no less interesting and just as important to maintaining the status quo of archipelago’s ecosystem.

An Island Guide to the Galapagos

An Island Guide to the Galapagos

The Galapagos Islands have long been a magnet to travellers interested in the ecology and geology of our natural world. This remote volcanic archipelago in the Pacific Ocean lies around 1,000km off the coast of Ecuador and supports some of the most diverse habitats on the planet. There are 13 main islands and numerous smaller ones, each with its own distinct characteristics. For anyone planning a trip to the Galapagos, holidays to explore this most unique part of the world can be enhanced by understanding some of the features and fast facts about them.
Bartholomew

While it is certainly not the largest, Bartholomew may be the most recognisable island. Its scenery is dominated by Pinnacle Rock, one of the most iconic landmarks of the archipelago. The tall, pointed rock just off the shore features in countless images of the region, providing a spectacular backdrop for the 360° views its high point. Bartholomew is also renowned as one of the best sites to encounter the magnificent marine wildlife, including Galapagos Penguins, sea lions, sharks and rays.

Espanola

Also known as Hood Island, Espanola is relatively flat, with the highest of its small hills measuring around 675ft. It is home to an abundance of wildlife including large numbers of sea lions and more than 12,000 pairs of Waved Albatross – almost the entire global population of the avian species. The breeding site at Gardner Bay, on its eastern shores, is also an exceptional place to explore the underwater life and encounter Marine Iguanas sunning themselves on the rocky beaches.

Isabela

The largest of all the islands, Isabela is in fact five small volcanoes joined together – all of which are still active. As such, the landscape is quite dramatic and varied, from the dense vegetation of the southern highlands to stark lava fields and mangrove swamps at lower altitudes. For visitors on Galapagos holidays, Isabela has multiple sites of interest including the vast wetlands, which support a huge variety of endemic and breeding birdlife.

Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz has six different vegetation zones, and the astounding diversity of its habitat is matched by the diversity and abundance of its wildlife species. Along with the opportunity to explore the many wild reptilian species of the highlands, it an integral part of the itinerary of most Galapagos holidays as it is the location of the Charles Darwin Research Station. The facility is an important breeding, education and research facility dedicated to the conservation of the Giant Tortoise, one of the most iconic species of the archipelago.

Fernandina

Fernandina is the youngest of all the islands, with its last volcanic activity recorded in 2009 from its centrepiece, La Cumbre. Renowned for its magnificent scenery, it is considered one of the world’s most untouched ecosystems, with no foreign species ever believed to have arrived on its shores. It is home to the nesting site of the unique flightless cormorants, along with the Blue Footed Booby and the elusive Galapagos Hawk.

A Unique Environment

The best Galapagos holidays are those with an itinerary that takes in both the large and smaller islands of the archipelago, in order to get a complete overview of not just its beauty but also its astonishing diversity. As one of the most fascinating places on Earth, scientists and biologists are still discovering new facts every year about this unique part of the world.
